US President Donald Trump praised conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “great American hero” and “martyr” during an emotional memorial service on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona. Tens of thousands of mourners, many in MAGA hats and patriotic attire, filled the stadium—some camping overnight to attend the event.
Trump, the headline speaker, was joined by Vice President JD Vance and senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. They highlighted Kirk’s political influence and his role in energizing young conservatives before he was fatally shot on 10 September while debating students in Utah.
“He was assassinated because he lived bravely, he lived boldly, and he argued brilliantly,” Trump told the crowd, calling Kirk’s death a moment that would “revitalize the conservative movement.”
Kirk’s wife, Erika, delivered a tearful speech, announcing she would continue her husband’s work as the new CEO of Turning Point USA. “I forgive the young man who took his life,” she said. “The answer to hate is not hate.”
The five-hour service featured Christian music, tributes from Turning Point USA members, and speeches by prominent conservatives. Elon Musk, who had a public rift with Trump earlier this year, attended and later posted a photo with the president captioned, “For Charlie.”
Trump mixed praise for Kirk with sharp political rhetoric, blaming the “radical left” for stoking division. “He’s a martyr now for America’s freedom,” Trump said. “None of us will ever forget Charlie. And neither now will history.”
The event underscored the deep political divisions in the US, with Kirk’s killing already sparking debate over political violence and civil liberties. His alleged killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, faces the death penalty, though authorities have not disclosed a motive.
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA at 18 and became a leading figure in conservative activism, known for his combative campus debates, staunch opposition to abortion and transgender rights, and unwavering support for Trump. His massive social media following helped mobilize young voters, making him a key voice in the MAGA movement.
